But Suhay knew what he was getting into, having set the current record of 283.5 nm a year earlier. In a Laser.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A local man is trying to break his own Guinness World Record for sailing.

Robert Suhay, 52, from Norfolk is taking on the dangerous Atlantic in his 14-foot sailboat.

He already holds the record for sailing the longest distance by himself in this type of boat, but he wants to beat his old record to make sure competitors don’t stand a chance.

Along the way, he could run into dangerous shoals, huge shipping tanker and sharks.

At 6 a.m. Wednesday, he started in Morehead, passing through Kill Devil Hills just before 9 a.m.

His final destination is Annapolis.

Suhay is raising money for the United Way of Virginia Hampton Roads chapter. He plans to take local campers sailing at the Nauticus.

In 2014, Robert Suhay tackled the “longest single-handed distance sailed in a dinghy by a male – 283.5 nautical miles (326.24 miles)” into the face of Hurricane Arthur for a Guinness World Record. Next week, Suhay will attempt to break his own record in a 14-foot Laser dinghy unassisted from Beaufort, N.C. to Annapolis, Md., a distance of about 340 nautical miles that will take him around Cape Hatteras and across dangerous ocean shipping lanes.

But, this time, Suhay will be using McMurdo’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) solutions to help keep him safe during the journey. McMurdo’s Smartfind S10 AIS man overboard (MOB) device will provide Suhay’s pinpoint location should anything go wrong on the open sea.
